THE POWER OF BIG AND SMALL INNOVATIONS

(1 min read)

Big innovations changing our lives and accelerating progress happen rarely. Discovery of fire, wheel invention, paper, compass, electricity, plane, antibiotics, transistor, the Internet, iPhone are separated by centuries or decades. These discoveries have a significant impact and are bold and remarkable.

However, there are millions of small innovations which quietly and without much noise improve our lives and support development.

Recently, I visited India and when I was there I used Uber for local commute. When I opened the Uber app, one thing caught my attention: a long list of options to choose from: Shuttle (car sharing), Uber Moto (motorbike ride, it’s my favorite 😉), Uber Auto (tuk-tuk), Go Rentals (car sharing), and Uber rides.

I was surprised at first when I saw all options, but then an a-ha moment came. India is a low-income country, with huge traffic jams, and a booming economy. Uber found a way to adjust services and prices to customer needs. What I saw on the screen of my iPhone were not the only little innovations. Uber introduced cash payments as there are many people there without debit or credit cards. They developed a lite Uber app for slower networks. Uber revolutionized urban transportation in India, connecting millions of riders with drivers.

Keep in mind that small, but impactful changes can impact user adoption and experience.

What’s your take? Are incremental innovations just as crucial as the big, disruptive ones? Share your thoughts!
